When the sea cools and the beach clubs close, Tuscany's spa country becomes the perfect day trip from Versilia. Within about an hour's drive you find steam caves, warm pools, Belle Époque towns and historic waters. One caveat: the only proper spa in Versilia itself, at Cinquale, is mostly closed until spring 2027. Here's where to go for real in autumn and winter, with hours and prices taken from official sites — and a clear note to check them when we don't have a figure.

Why a spa day makes sense from the coast in winter

Winter in Versilia has its own pace: a windy Passeggiata, snow-capped Apuan peaks on the horizon, trattorias without queues. What it lacks is warm seawater. Spas fill that gap — an afternoon in a 35 °C pool or a steam cave, then dinner back in Versilia or Lucca. You don't need a week of "cure": one planned day, swimsuit in the bag and, at weekends, a booking made ahead.

In autumn Versilia's spa life shifts an hour inland: steam caves and warm pools while the sea rests.

Terme della Versilia in Cinquale: closed until 2027 (with exceptions)

The Terme della Versilia at Cinquale di Montignoso (Villa Undulna) are the only true spa station inside Versilia. The water is salt-bromo-iodine, around 17 °C at source according to Visit Tuscany, and treatments also use peat from Lake Massaciuccoli. Address: Viale Marina / Via Gramsci 2, 54038 Cinquale di Montignoso (MS), tel. +39 0585 807788.

Important, November 2026: the official site (termedellaversilia.com) states that the hotel, spa and pool are due to reopen in spring 2027. Apartments remain available year-round; there is also an extraordinary hotel opening from 26 to 29 November 2026. Do not plan a classic spa stay now: for mud, pools and wellness circuits wait for the reopening, or choose one of the destinations below. If you're in Forte dei Marmi or Cinquale for other reasons, the area is still handy (see Forte dei Marmi), but not as a spa day.

Grotta Giusti (Monsummano Terme): the best winter choice

About an hour's drive from Viareggio, in the Valdinievole, this is the off-season spa trip we recommend most. Grotta Giusti is a natural steam cave about 200 metres long — Giuseppe Verdi called it the "eighth wonder of the world". Thermal water inside is around 36 °C; outdoors the pool stays around 35 °C even in winter. Address: Via Grotta Giusti 1411, Monsummano Terme. Site: terme.grottagiustispa.com.

From 2 November 2026 pool hours are daily 10:00–18:00, Wednesdays until 15:00. The thermal centre is open Monday–Sunday 9:00–19:00 (Sundays from 10:00). Pool prices (official page): weekday day €36, weekend/holiday €49, weekday afternoon from 14:00 €29; children 5–11 half price. Day Spa packages with the cave start from about €120 (Thermarium/Meditarium): say "from", check current figures and book, especially at weekends. Pool-only tickets are fine for a swim; for the cave, pick a package and arrive a little early.

Bagni di Lucca: Terme Bagno Bernabò

In the Serchio valley, 45–60 minutes from Viareggio via Lucca, the Terme Bagno Bernabò (Via Bagni Caldi 36) are still open. They are the only working spa in Bagni di Lucca: the historic Jean Varraud baths have been closed since 2021. Sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium waters, marble tubs, a steam grotto and mud treatments. Official hours: Mon–Fri 9:00–20:00, Sat–Sun 9:00–18:00 (termebagnobernabo.it). We don't invent treatment prices — check the site or phone before you go. The valley is lovely for a walk among bridges and villages too, and pairs well with a day trip to Lucca (train from Viareggio, then a short hop by car or bus to the baths).

Montecatini Terme: Belle Époque and tradition

Montecatini is the great spa town of the Valdinievole, reachable by car (A11) or train on the Lucca–Montecatini line. It isn't a half-day warm soak like Grotta Giusti, but a centre of colonnades, parks and period baths: Visit Tuscany presents it as a day trip for architecture and thermal tradition. Ideal if you want coffee under the arcades, a stroll and, if open, a circuit in the historic spas. Always check hours and packages on each venue's official site — we don't list unconfirmed prices here.

How to organise it from Viareggio

For Grotta Giusti and Montecatini head into the Valdinievole (car, about an hour). For Bagni di Lucca follow the Serchio valley after Lucca. If you're staying locally, compare areas in our where to stay in Versilia guide: Forte dei Marmi and Cinquale are handy for heading north; Viareggio for Lucca and Pisa. On a rainy or north-wind day, spas beat a closed seafront: for more off-season ideas see Viareggio in winter, the November–December Versilia calendar, or an afternoon at Lake Massaciuccoli (the peat used at Terme della Versilia comes from there).
