Lake Massaciuccoli and Torre del Lago: Puccini, boat trips and nature

Ten minutes from Viareggio's beaches lies another world: reed beds, herons and the quiet lake that inspired Giacomo Puccini.
Torre del Lago and Puccini
On the lakeshore Giacomo Puccini lived for about thirty years and composed many of his operas. His home is now the Villa Museo Puccini, which also holds the composer's tomb. In front of it is the Belvedere Puccini, the lakeside promenade renewed in 2024. In summer the nearby Puccini Festival stages open-air opera (see our events guide).
Puccini called Torre del Lago his paradise: the lake at sunset explains it better than any guidebook.
By boat on the lake
Boat trips through the lake and marshes leave from the Belvedere and can often be combined with a visit to the villa. Navilago and other operators publish dates and times, which vary by season.

The LIPU reserve
On the opposite shore, towards Massarosa, the Oasi LIPU Massaciuccoli has boardwalks through the reeds and birdwatching hides; in spring it also runs guided boat trips. The lake is part of the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Park, like Lecciona beach.
Tips
- Come at sunset, when the lake turns pink.
- In spring and summer, bring mosquito repellent.
