With a buggy, a bucket and maybe a dog on a lead, the question is no longer "where's the most beautiful sea?" but "where will we all relax?". Good news: Versilia is one of Italy's easiest coasts for families.

Why kids love Versilia

The beach is fine sand and the seabed is usually shallow and slopes gently, so little ones can play at the water's edge with water up to their ankles. Many beach clubs ("bagni") have lifeguards, showers, play areas and sometimes a pool or kids' club.

Fine sand and a gently sloping seabed: for kids, the Versilia sea is one giant paddling pool.

With a dog

In Viareggio dogs are allowed on free public beaches if they are microchipped and registered, kept on a lead, with a muzzle to hand; you must pick up after them. The hours when dogs may swim are set by municipal ordinance and change: in summer 2026, for example, the town trialled all-day swimming until 15 October. Some private beach clubs accept dogs in dedicated areas: always ask first.
