Viareggio isn't just about the sea: throughout the year it hosts events of national and international standing. Here are the big dates season by season, with some history and tips for planning. Remember: dates change every year, so always check the official websites.

Winter: the Viareggio Carnival

Born on 25 February 1873 with a parade of carriages along Via Regia, it's now one of the most famous carnivals in Europe. The typical programme includes several masked parades with floats along the seafront, neighbourhood parties, balls, music and fireworks. The 2026 edition, for example, ran from 1 to 21 February.

Its mascots are Burlamacco and Ondina, designed by Uberto Bonetti in 1931. The floats are built year-round in the Cittadella del Carnevale. Everything is in our Carnival guide.

Tips: buy tickets through official channels, book accommodation well in advance and bring confetti and something warm.

Carnival in winter, opera in summer, books in July: Viareggio never stops.

Summer: the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago

The Festival was born in 1930 when, six years after Giacomo Puccini's death, Giovacchino Forzano fulfilled the composer's wish to hear one of his operas in the open air, by the lake: on 24 August 1930 La bohème was staged, conducted by Pietro Mascagni. Since 1966 it has been an annual summer event.

Today it usually runs between July and August in the open-air Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini, opened in 2008, with around 3,200 seats overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli. It's organised by the Fondazione Festival Pucciniano.

Tips: bring a jumper for the evening by the lake and some insect repellent. Arrive early to enjoy the sunset.

Summer: the Viareggio-Rèpaci Literary Prize

Founded in 1929, it's one of Italy's oldest and most prestigious literary prizes. The ceremony takes place in summer: the 2026 edition was held on 23 and 24 July at the Belvedere delle Maschere. Great for book lovers and author talks.

Summer: La Versiliana

Every summer the large Versiliana pine forest in Marina di Pietrasanta hosts a programme of talks, shows and concerts. The schedule is usually published in spring.

Autumn: Lucca Comics & Games

Not in Versilia, but very close: in Lucca, between late October and early November, one of the world's biggest comics and games fairs takes place. Many visitors stay in Versilia. See the Lucca day trip.
